2011-01-13 ANTARCTICA, Point Wild Elephant Island

The weather had calmed somewhat so we were able to take zodiacs close to the shore of Elephant Island to see the place where the 28 crew of the Endurance realised they had to split into 2 groups - Shackleton and 5 others sailing to South Georgia in the strengthened lifeboat James Caird, and the other 22 remaining on the "beach" in terrible conditions.

On this little beach 22 of Shackleton's crew waited 4 winter months to be rescued!

How those frontbitten, hungry chaps would have loved to wake up to see The World!

Tim Jarvis gave a lecture "When Hell Freezes" and described how he retraced Australian polar explorer Sir Douglas Mawson's journey of 1912-13 when 2 of his colleagues died.
