2011-01-14 ANTARCTICA, Gerlache Strait to Errea Channel

The World sailed down the Gerlache Strait, named after Adrien de Gerlache, leader of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-99 aboard the Belgica. This expedition charted much of the Antarctic Peninsula but was caught in the pack ice and had to spend the winter there.

The Chief Officer aboard was the Norweigen Roald Amundsen who later became the first man (with 4 colleagues) to reach the South Pole (using dogs) on 14th December 1911 beating Robert Falcon Scott and his ill-fated party (without dogs) by 35 days.
